summer is my jam

TREES-723x1024IT is here. I look forward to it all year long. It makes me smile, my heart beats faster, and I am giddy with anticipation. Summer…my favorite season. Summer is my jam.

This summer I am excited for a quite a few things.

  • Beach Nights. Every Thursday evening we head down to the beach with our friends to surf, eat, talk, and watch the sunset. It’s the best. Beach Days with my Jr. High girls are going to be pretty rad too!
  • Using the Grill. Most of the year we are indoors and I’m doing the cooking (which I love). But, in the summer I take advantage of my husbands grilling skills (which he loves…I think). I am excited to make white fish with lemon, olive oil, tomatoes, shallots, and garlic. You just throw it all in a covered pan on the grill and when it’s all done you dip crusty bread in the amazing sauce.
  • Wearing Dresses. I wear dresses all year long, but it’s nice to have warmer weather and not worry if I am going to get cold. Plus I love the beach bum style and more of those options become available during summer.
  • Neighborhood Walks. Looking forward to the night that we take a walk after dinner and it’s still 75 degrees at 8pm. Holding hands with the man I love and praising the God we love. So dreamy.
  • San Onofre Beach Camping. Camping 20 feet from the water? Sure…I mean YES PLEASE. My favorite camping trip ever has been to San Onofre State Beach. You’re in and out of the water all day, the sun is warm, the drinks are cold, and you get to hear the waves as you drift off to sleep. Plus, it’s just a 5 minute drive to San Clemente for a walk around downtown. AND this year I hope to try paddle-boarding for the first time ever.
  • Freckles & Sunscreen. I love getting a tan, for me, equals I love getting more freckles. I always say I like to get a little burnt so I can get a base layer of freckles. Ha! However, that can only last so long. With my milky white complexion, sunscreen is my friend. It smells like a tropical island or a coconut and it reminds me of childhood.
  • Popsicles. Watermelon, berry, lime, pineapple…cold and refreshing. It’s happening.

What are YOU looking forward to/excited about this summer? I would love to hear it!

our full life: week eighteen & nineteen

Blog burn-out. This is what happens to me when life is sad, confusing, and hard. I don’t feel like writing and sharing as I normally do. I know there is probably others out there that can relate.

If you read my last blog post you saw that my sweet student Katherine was really in a scary place with an intensive brain surgery and threat of brain cancer.

I felt like I couldn’t live life normally. My days felt sad. I wanted to hit rewind before all this happened. Still, I believed God is good. We were all waiting on Him. Here is some incredible news her father shared with us:

The oncologists called back…and here is what we learned. The mass was so unique, it shows up in less than one in a million, that they sent it to the top clinic in Boston for a second opinion. They are actually going to write an article on it. We are praising God that it’s not malignant. It was some sort of vascular malformation that they don’t even have a name for yet. We are rejoicing over this news! Thank you for your prayers! Please keep praying for her full recovery. They will continue to do MRIs on her, the next one in three months, to monitor her head, but they are projecting a full recovery. When Katherine got the news that it was not cancerous and the prognosis was good for a full recovery, she couldn’t stop smiling. Tonight when I prayed with her before bed, she actually thanked God for using this to grow her faith and trust in God. Wow! The first thing she wants to do when she’s all better is to go surfing.

Amazing amazing news. I was blown away and brought to tears. Our God is absolutely in control and deeply loves us! It was a joy to hear of her smiling. I love that smile! Now we continue to pray and lean on God for the days to come.

Here is a glance at what the past couple of weeks looked like for us.

crates and barrel.jpgWork errands at Crate & Barrel. Sometimes work errands are awesome.

Sweet Kathernie.jpgVisiting this sweetheart was a blessing. Her hope in God is inspiring and profound.

student bowling.jpgBurritos & Bowling!!! Our girls definitely missed Katherine.

porch sitting.jpgPorch-sitting in my new sun dress. Enjoying the heat. Giant glass of ice water in hand.

dads jungle.jpgMy dad’s jungle of a backyard. I think I have taken pictures of it before…but it sure is growing!

Dads flowers.jpgTake me away.

snack texture.jpgNight time snack. So many textures.

red fix.jpgNot my usual coffee order. Eliminating caffeine, sugar, and acid for a few weeks. Good thing I love all tea.

p&r marathon.jpgParks & Recreation marathon last weekend. We love Lil’ Sebastian.

That’s about it everyone. I think I’m slowly coming back into the swing of things so hopefully you will hear from me more.

I wanted to leave you with some of the lessons Katherine’s father has been learning that we can all relate to.

Here are some lessons we learned, or relearned that I would like to pass on:

  1. When Jesus says follow me, the story is about Him and not us. God has so graciously written us into that story, but it is His story.
  2. Our sovereign God is a good God and He can be trusted, no matter what may happen.
  3. He will always be walking with us, even if we are not walking faithfully with Him. It’s not so much that we are clinging to God, it’s that He holds on to us.
  4. The trials we face are never wasted by God. Therefore, let’s make sure we don’t waste those either.
  5. Those with a limp lean hard into God. We have been leaning hard!

AMEN!

Until next week, friends!

rosemary + strawberry sodas

It’s hot outside. It’s a gorgeous day. And anything could happen.

photo (3)

Like rosemary + strawberry sodas.

photo (2)

A sweet little treat for all of you. You will enjoy this!

photo (5)

All you need is some rosemary, strawberries, sugar, club soda, and some cute straws! Sit back, relax, and sip on some yummy goodness. Throw in a good book or a friendly face and you are all set!

Rosemary Simple Syrup

Ingredients:

  • 6 springs of Rosemary
  • 1 and 1/2 cups of white sugar
  • 2 cups of water

photo (9)

Directions:

  1. Place all ingredients in a small saucepan.
  2. Heat over medium until it begins to boil. All sugar should be dissolved.
  3. Remove from burner and cover for 30 minutes.
  4. Strain into a tight sealing glass jar. Store in fridge. Enjoy!

Strawberry Simple Syrup

Ingredients:

  • 8-10 large strawberries, sliced
  • 1 cup of white sugar
  • 1/2 cups of brown sugar
  • 2 cups of water

photo (19)

Directions:

  1. Place all ingredients in a small saucepan.
  2. Heat over medium until it begins to boil. All sugar should be dissolved.
  3. Remove from burner and cover for 30 minutes.
  4. Strain into a tight sealing glass jar. Store in fridge. Enjoy!

photo (4)

To make a rosemary + strawberry soda just add a 2-3 tablespoons of each flavored syrup to a glass, pour club soda, and stir! Garnish with a cute straw, a spring of rosemary and a single strawberry! Or keep it pure and simple without mixing the two syrups! Whatever way you like! You can’t mess this up.

photo (18)

What a great way to kick-off  the month of May! Enjoy this weather and the syrups while they last friends.

And a HUGE shout-out/thank you/XOXO to my sweet friend Birttan, of What She Would Have Worn, for making these yummy sodas with me! What a lovely day! Can’t wait to see what we do next. ❤
