our full life: march, april, may

Hello again!

I’ve missed this. It’s been a while since I have posted and I am looking forward to writing and sharing some things here! Finding time to keep up with blogging is difficult, but I recently had a surgery that has forced me to rest. So, silver lining, folks!

In March we enjoyed lots of celebrations:

March Collage

  • A beach birthday party for one of our favorite 12 year olds
  • Started two very different, but very good novels: Landline and The Nightingale
  • Went to dinner and a Jose Gonzales concert with one of our favorite couples ever
  • Celebrated 5 years of marriage with my sweet, handsome, enthusiastic, funny, strong, kind husband
  • Spent a weekend away in Las Vegas on the lake, enjoyed a Gordon Ramsey burger, and the best breakfast I’ve ever had at Bouchon Bakery
  • Bret treated me to some shopping and I ravaged the Anthropologie sale rack
  • Date day at VGs, Zumbar, SD Zoo, and El Indio
  • Celebrated EASTER SUNDAY at the Flower Fields in Carlsbad
  • Celebrated my husband turning 30 years old! Whoa…good thing he has the best baby face I’ve ever seen.

In April we enjoyed:

April Collage

  • Co-Birthday 30th Birthday Party for Bret and Steve
  • Beach walks and runs
  • 2 Fountain Valley girlfriend dates
  • Fun celebration work dinner
  • Guy and Girl hang outs with our Jr. High kids
  • Candle making class at Mr. B’s Necessities shop
  • A beach birthday party for one of our favorite sweet 16 year olds
  • Broke my pinky toe playing beach soccer
  • Spanish themed Cooking Club – I made olive tapenade toast and mushrooms sautéed in garlic and white wine
  • Spike ball Sunday
  • My mom came to visit from Idaho! We had a beach day, watercolor night, Community Group, and dinner together at Benihana (her first time hehe).

In May we enjoyed:

May Collage

  • Bret traveled with one of our Pastors to Reno for an Acts 29 Conference
  • Primos tacos and gelato with our Community Group
  • Date Night at Target and The Flying Pig
  • Mother’s Day dinner at my oldest and best girlfriend’s house
  • Book Club meeting for The Nightingale with the best french food spread ever
  • Said goodbye to the palm tree outside our front door…I loved that thing
  • 8th Grade Graduation party with our Jr. High kids – SO fun!
  • Lofty Coffee with Jocey
  • In home massages (late Christmas present for Bret)
  • Memorial Day appreciation and BBQ with friends

Something else that happened in March and is just now beginning to wrap up is an unexpected health update. My GP looked at my neck back in March and she thought my thyroid gland looked enlarged. She ordered an ultrasound which revealed that my thyroid was normal size but they could see there was a mass growing on the right side. I was then sent to a specialist. He did a biopsy and recommended I get it removed due to its large size. The biopsy came back a few weeks later as negative – PRAISE THE LORD! But I still had to consider surgery. I felt the most peace with moving forward with surgery and I am sure glad God directed me that way. Just this last week, they removed the mass and the Doctors laughed to each other when my husband asked how big it was. They said, “That thing was impressive!” So the mass is gone, it’s not cancerous, and I still have most of my thyroid intact. Recovery isn’t fun, but I am so grateful for God putting good doctors around me and for helping me to get healthy. I’m also so grateful for all the people who have prayed for me – God heard all of those prayers. And for those who have brought me flowers and food and cards and blessed me with your company. THANK YOU SO MUCH. My body is in pain but my heart is full.

Until next month…I hope you enjoyed hearing about “our full life” over the last few months.

our full life: january & february

Hello friends!

Can you believe February is already over!? What happened to the time?? Now, March brings Daylight Savings and EASTER! Wow…2016 is flying by. I wanted to share what the past couple of months looked like in the Theis Family.

ofl jf 4

In January, we enjoyed:

  • LOTS of rain and hail at the beginning of the month
  • Yummy gelato at the shop down the street from us
  • Annual Tea Party with my friends from OC
  • I celebrated 1 year working for Planning Center Online
  • I also celebrated my friend Stephanie and the coming of her sweet baby Poppy Marie
  • We had dinner at a co-worker’s house and got to meet his sweet family
  • We went to Winter Camp up at Mile High Pines with our Jr. High students
  • I got sick…the cold, the fever, the whole thing everyone is getting
  • This is the best news of all right now: I had the OBGYN appointment I had been waiting for and we saw that ALL my abnormal cysts are GONE! Praise the Lord!!!! The doctor had all good things to say and I go back in 3 months for another check-up to see if anything else that may have changed. To say I was shocked is an understatement.

In February, we enjoyed:

  • Our Community Group women started gathering every Saturday to share the stories of how Jesus saved us
  • I had some fun beach days
  • Bret started an apologetics class at Talbot
  • My Book Club gathered to discuss “The Lake House” and eat all the yummy foods that came up in the book
  • I had some crazy, fun, wonderful weeks at work culminating in our Planning Center University event
  • Bret got a new position and a raise at his work!
  • Bret and I celebrated Valentine’s Day on Coronado Island
  • My dad and I shared our birthday at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park
  • I finished my second book of the year…trying to read 12+ this year
  • Bret and my CG Leaders threw me a Birthday Party with all my favorite things and fun games
  • Bret and I have gone on 2 Saturday coffee dates and finally checked out Local Tap House together…look at this silly, wonderful, best friend of mine!

ofl jf 2

I’ve kept up the Bible reading that I started in January which is such an accomplishment for me. I hope I can keep saying that as this year progresses! And February was a wonderful month for celebrating and making memories. I won’t soon forget it.

Goodnight from here!

i love lists : crafty friends

Happy Friday!

Today I want to share about some of my most crafty friends. These friends are lovely people making lovely things for this lovely world. Please enjoy this list and get inspired! Think about how you might be able to use their services and/or products to bless yourself and others.

  1. Hand Lettering Co.
    Our friend Chris Wright, along with his beautiful family, operates the amazing Hand Lettering Co. We met Chris over 5 years ago at our previous church. We served in Jr. High Ministry together, got to see Chris get married to his sweet wife Carly, and got so excited when Hand Lettering Co. began. When the Wrights started a business creating hand lettered Scripture art, Bret and I were so impressed…we still are! I love that the Wrights goal was and still is to use their God-given gifts for God’s glory and to encourage others. It’s no surprise we have an original piece, along with many other prints, framed in our home and offices. Follow them on instagram.
    wright Collagewright Collage 2
  2. Make+Do Handmade
    Our friend Brittan Weaver is one of the most creative and passionate girls we know. She has never given up on her desire to make art and share it with the world. She has an eye for beauty: natural, soft, classic, and fun. Brittan has been a part of my life for over 8 years! She is beautiful inside and out and I am honored to call her friend. Head over to Make+Do Handmade to find calligraphy, invitations, watercolor prints, headbands, flower crowns, and seasonal gift items. Follow her on instagram!
    BW Collage
  3. The Trunk + Key
    Our friend Sarah Trunkey sells vintage maps from the 1930s. They are beautiful for framing in your home as decor or to be given as a gift. Her maps are perfect for weddings and house warmings. The most wonderful part of her products is that all profits currently go toward the Trunkey family adoption fees. What a wonderful use of funds! Bret and I have known the Trunkeys for over 3 years now and they truly have a special place in our hearts. Sarah is a self-taught bookbinder, a lover of beautiful paper, a vintage map hoarder, and a Hoosier Girl turned SoCal Gal. Trunk + Key is a representation of the amazing family of God.
    T&K Collage
  4. Shamrocks & Tangerines
    Our friend Amanda Picard is a master crafter! Amanda is a full-time mom to her sweet baby James and wife to her husband, Jimmy. She is known for her quilts around our church family, but most recently she has been very involved in the diaper business and created her own brand – Lucky Diapers. Lucky Diapers are a one size pocket diaper. They have 5 waist positions and 3 rise positions. They are lined with suede cloth to help wick moisture into the absorbent insert to keep your baby’s bum dry. So cool, right!? Follow Shamrocks & Tangerines on instagram.
    ST Collage
  5. Mr. B’s Necessities
    Our friends Shem and Lara Gott started the most incredible company, crafting all-natural soy candles, soaps, and now deodorant made with essential oils. Lara also makes beautiful handmade jewelry. Their candles are in almost every room in our home, their soaps are out on the counter and in the shower, and we hope to have their deodorant soon! Mr. B’s new storefront in Oceanside is just perfect! We love that it’s right next to, not one, but TWO coffee shops. Shem and Lara are some of the sweetest and most genuine people you could meet. Their children are adorable and their passion for God’s glory is evident in all that they do. Shem and Bret serve in music ministry together at The Fields, which is a joy as well. Follow Mr. B’s on instagram.

gospel wednesday

GW

Good Morning Friends!

A couple of weeks ago I was on a walk with a close friend and we were discussing something that we both had in common. Something that is new and amazing. Something that doesn’t come around in every season of life. Something that seems too good to be true.

Contentment.

Screen Shot 2014-10-28 at 10.09.14 PM

It’s hard to specifically describe what has happened in my heart, but something has definitely occurred and I am so grateful. The most wonderful part of this contentment is Who my happiness and satisfaction has ultimately come from…but more on that in a moment.

For a few years now I have really struggled with feeling like I just couldn’t get to where I needed or wanted to be. I desired to be valuable in terms of my job status, living situation, take-home salary, and personal achievements. I was very concerned with impressing and attaining the approval of my family, friends, and acquaintances. And for a few years now I haven’t had the ability to shake a person’s hand and present myself with a, “Hi, I’m Sarah and I do something super important sounding for 40+ hours a week and I make a great salary,” or “Hi, I’m Sarah and I accomplished exactly what I expected I would at 26 years of age.” Writing it out is funny because I know how silly, empty, and misguided it really is.

It has been a hard few years for me with lots of rejection and many tearful conversations. I knew the truth that satisfaction can only be found in my God and King…but at the same time I guess I didn’t fully believe it; it wasn’t sinking in. God has been trying to show me time and time again, through MANY shut doors, that who I am in Him (forgiven, alive, loved, adopted, redeemed, rescued, protected, provided for, wanted, righteous, His daughter) and who I belong to is infinitely more valuable and incredibly more important.

So how have I been able to experience contentment NOW, after all those years of rejection, discontentment, and misguided desires? The answer is simple: Jesus carried me. Jesus never left me and never let me go. Jesus brought me through and showed me His grace. Jesus taught me that satisfaction, true satisfaction, can ONLY be found in HIM and His love displayed on the cross. I have used this verse so many times to describe God’s love because it never returns void: Romans 5:8 – “God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

That being said, there is no special pill or 5 step plan to true contentment. The way to contentment, or a state of happiness and satisfaction, is found in Jesus. Spending time reading Scripture, praying to God, and being in community with other believers – these are essential as well. But at the end of the day…the only thing we can be truly satisfied in is our Maker, our King, our Jesus. To quote John Piper, “God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in Him.”

As my friend and I continued to walk and talk about what God has been doing in our lives we encouraged one another in the contentment He has given us for this season. We were both stirred up to be so thankful. God has humbled both of us so that we can see His goodness, mercy, perfection, and immeasurable love. It is my prayer that whoever is reading this might find contentment in Jesus as well. He is SO good!!!

Please be encouraged by the Scripture below and reflect of God’s greatness, holiness, trustworthiness, faithfulness, thoughtfulness, planning, generosity, creativity, and power. Be satisfied in HIM.

PSALM 104

O Lord My God, You Are Very Great

Bless the Lord, O my soul!

O Lord my God, you are very great!

You are clothed with splendor and majesty, covering yourself with light as with a garment,

stretching out the heavens like a tent.

He lays the beams of his chambers on the waters; he makes the clouds his chariot;

he rides on the wings of the wind;

he makes his messengers winds, his ministers a flaming fire.

He set the earth on its foundations,

so that it should never be moved. You covered it with the deep as with a garment;

the waters stood above the mountains.

At your rebuke they fled; at the sound of your thunder they took to flight.

The mountains rose, the valleys sank down

to the place that you appointed for them. You set a boundary that they may not pass,

so that they might not again cover the earth.

You make springs gush forth in the valleys; they flow between the hills;

they give drink to every beast of the field;

the wild donkeys quench their thirst. Beside them the birds of the heavens dwell;

they sing among the branches.

From your lofty abode you water the mountains; the earth is satisfied with the fruit of your work.

You cause ithe grass to grow for the livestock

and plants for man to cultivate, that he may bring forth food from the earth

and wine to gladden the heart of man,

oil to make his face shine and bread to strengthen man’s heart.

The trees of the Lord are watered abundantly,

the cedars of Lebanon that he planted. In them the birds build their nests;

the stork has her home in the fir trees.

The high mountains are for the wild goats; the rocks are a refuge for the rock badgers.

He made the moon to mark the seasons;

the sun knows its time for setting. You make darkness, and it is night,

when all the beasts of the forest creep about.

The young lions roar for their prey, seeking their food from God.

When the sun rises, they steal away

and lie down in their dens. Man goes out to his work

and to his labor until the evening.

O Lord, how manifold are your works! In wisdom have you made them all;

the earth is full of your creatures.

Here is the sea, great and wide, which teems with creatures innumerable,

living things both small and great.

There go the ships, and Leviathan, which you formed to play in it.

These all look to you,

to give them their food in due season. When you give it to them, they gather it up;

when you open your hand, they are filled with good things.

When you hide your face, they are dismayed; when you take away their breath, they die

and return to their dust.

When you send forth your Spirit, they are created, and you renew the face of the ground.

May the glory of the Lord endure forever;

may the Lord rejoice in his works, who looks on the earth and it trembles,

who touches the mountains and they smoke!

I will sing to the Lord as long as I live; I will sing praise to my God while I have being.

May my meditation be pleasing to him,

for I rejoice in the LordLet sinners be consumed from the earth,

and let the wicked be no more!

Bless the Lord, O my soul! Praise the Lord!

PSALM 104

Many prayers to you.
