books + food: the irresistible blueberry bakeshop & cafe

Hi friends!

I recently finished a cute little love story and I think it’s a great “lay by the pool” + “soak up some sun” + “drink some iced coffee” kind of book.  It’s not award-winning and it’s totally predictable, but I just really enjoyed it! It’s called The Irresistible Blueberry Bakeshop & Cafe.

It also had a long list of DELICIOUS foods! It made me hungry and I was longing to travel out to Maine for all the goodness. I am currently in a book club that meets every few months or so and I always put together the food list for our meeting. Then we split up the list and enjoy the foods of the book while we discuss the story and our favorite characters.

Even though this wasn’t a book for the book club, the food was just too good not to list somewhere. So, I hope you enjoy the list and make the blueberry muffin recipe at the end.

3 things i’m loving in february

Happy February…or End of February is more like it…haha! I’m really up to the final hour with this one. But I didn’t want to miss sharing my favorite things with you.

  1. Ruby Red Grapefruit Juice. I have always loved citrus and acidity, but I always forget about grapefruit juice! I bought it this month and love pouring myself a glass. It’s so refreshing and full of Vitamin C.
    Grapefruit-Juice
  2. Watching re-runs of Friends on Netflix. Friends is always good for a laugh and, even though I have seen it a million times, I still love it. We are looking forward to the episodes with Paul Rudd coming up soon.
    friends show
  3. Painted Nails. I usually have plain nails and I pick at them. It’s a horrible habit and they never look pretty. This February, I kept them groomed and painted and I have been loving it.

I’ll post some more things I’m loving in March! What are 3 things you’re loving right now?

3 things i’m loving in january

Hi friends,

If you didn’t see my post from October, I mentioned a podcast I absolutely love: The Happy Hour with Jamie Ivey. Every episode, she asks her guest 3 things they’re loving right now. I thought that would be a fun post series! These things can be anything: things, places, people, food, books, concepts, and…like I said, anything! I think this will be fun to share my ideas and then you can also you can share three things you’re loving with me in the comments! Good plan, right? YAY!

Here are the three things I’m loving right now:

  1. The Lake House. I’m reading this book for Book Club (which is another thing I’m really enjoying) and it’s been great so far. A compelling mystery with lovely and intriguing characters. I can’t wait to see where the author takes it. It’s also fun because I am in charge of making the food list for the book club get-together, so I am keeping my eyes peeled for all the food mentions. So far the foods that came up are: lemon cake, fresh bread w/preserves, tea, and pear cake. YUM!
Screen Shot 2016-01-28 at 5.37.31 PM
  2. Organic Cinnamon Spice Oatmeal from Trader Joes. It’s instant oatmeal and I usually do from scratch, but I just haven’t had the time. It’s so filling and feels like such a treat. It only has a few whole and simple ingredients.
  3. My Frye boots. Bret “wins” at Christmas every year…and he did it again with one of my most favorite gifts from him: real leather boots by Frye Company. They’re classic, comfortable, and sturdy. I’ll get some good years out of these.

I’ll post some more things I’m loving in February! What are 3 things you’re loving right now?

i love lists: a day in carlsbad village

I love where I live. I really didn’t think I’d end up here, but I’m sure glad I did! Today’s list will consist of the typical Carlsbad life Bret and I are blessed to experience. Some things are a weekly occurance and some things are an every-so-often kind of thing. For me, it’s the little things that make you love where you live. Enjoy the list and get out here for yourself!

a2

  1. Tower 30. Our favorite tower for meeting friends, swimming, surfing, and bonfires.
  2. Breakfast at Cafe Topes. They won an award for the best cinnamon roll….so, yeah.
  3. A walk down Garfield. On the south side is where I got married and on the north side is where my friend and I share dreams of owning the cutest little yellow duplex.
  4. Knock Out Pizza for the best garlic knots.
  5. Walking the Sea Wall. Carlsbad Blvd. at it’s finest.
  6. Secret sushi guy. Best poke bowls I’ve ever had, but you have to get there EARLY.
  7. The train track trail. I just love walking it with a friend and hearing the train go by. Then ending the walk at Garden State Bagels. It’s called balance.
  8. Cafe Elysa has great apricot iced tea and a few fire pits outside to sit and stay for a while.
  9. If you like antiquing, there’s a great little shop on Grand.
  10. For mexican food, we always end up at Senor Grubby’s.
  11. El Coyote Bar & Grill…simply because it’s fun to hear the live music and see the regulars dance it up.
  12. A new addition to the village: Gaia Gelato! It’s our new regular spot.
  13. Witch Creek Winery does a great tasting experience.
  14. Grab a coffee at Vinaka and then peruse Spin Records.l across the street.
  15. And you gotta love when there are street fairs, farmers markets, and art shows. They close a bunch of streets down and you can enjoy walking through downtown.
  16. Another new place for Bret and me: Blue Ocean. I liked just sitting in the lounge and ordering a bunch of small things.
  17. I know every town has one, but I really like the local  Carlsbad Library. Sometimes it’s fun to just sit in the aisles and peek in on your favorite authors.
  18. Last, but not least, Carlsbad Lagoon. Whether you’re just laying out with a good book, paddle boarding, or jet skiiing…it’s a great local favorite.

These are all so fun and there’s many many more not on this list. You can walk and bike almost everywhere and the best part is running into all your friends. It’s touristy at times, but ultimately a “small town” where you’ll always run into the people you know and love.

See you all tomorrow! #write31days #31daysofwriting

on turning 27…

SO, I turned 27 this week. And it feels good. No, it feels very good.

When I was in Jr. High, I thought 27 was OLD. I also thought that I would probably have, like, seven kids by now. But that’s a whole other story. All that to say, I haven’t always had the best expectations when it came to my age. So…as a 26 year old, I was freaking out about turning 27. Dumb, I know. But it felt so much OLDER in my head.

Well, surprise-surprise, I was wrong again. I just feel good! Excited, hopeful, peaceful, and humbled.

27 adventures[Picture from a birthday hike with my sweet dad. He and I share the same birthday!]

I received so many sweet and caring birthday texts/calls from people on Monday. I loved each and every one. My favorite came from my sister in Alabama (love you Sare) and my other favorite came from my friend Luanna. She said “Happy Birthday” and proceeded to tell me why I am now her favorite age. I asked her why 27 (she is now in her early 30’s) and this what she wrote:

Lots of reasons. Seemed like I was finally old enough to have some wisdom/life experience under my belt, but still carefree (no kids). We had a tight group of friends we did real life ministry with and I finally had a job I wanted that paid more than just peanuts. Also, I was in super good shape. Yep, 27 was a good year for me. Plus, I mentally got stuck there so now you’re my age. 😉 “

Luanna has been a friend of mine for only a few years, but it has felt like longer, in the best possible way. She is my peer and also someone I really look up to. She is a lovely person and wonderful friend. I am so thankful God placed her and her family in my life. Plus, she really makes me laugh…like, big belly laughs and long silent laughs. The best.

Anyway, back to the text. This text was so interesting to read because I could relate to it 100%. It’s a really true depiction of how I am feeling about 27 right now. Here’s how I relate to Luanna at 27:

  • I love where God has brought me, what He has taught me, how He has challenged me, and the ways He is transforming me. All glory be to Christ.
  • I absolutely cannot wait to have children. I am still waiting for that blessing to come, but until that day, there is a lot my wonderful husband and I can be care-free about: schedules, dinner times, date-nights, having a nightcap, reading books, spontaneous adventures, binge-watching Netflix, and being bride & groom.
  • I am at an awesome church with an incredible community. So many brothers and sisters to support me, love me, pray for me, do ministry with me…and vice-versa. God regularly blows my mind with this reality. He has made me very rich.
  • I just got a super cool job at a local software company. At first, it felt like I was living someone else’s life. Now I’m in it. And I’m loving it so much. It’s challenging for sure, but it finally feels like I’m where I want to be.
  • I just started pouring more of my time and energy into eating really well and working out more. It’s been fantastic and just what my husband and I are needing right now. And I’m really excited that one of my birthday presents was a fitbit!
  • I also plan on having lots of adventures this year: Texas, surfing, Florida, Disneyworld, Alabama, camping, and COOKING. A creative kitchen goal for me this year is to cook/bake 29 adventurous things before I turn 28. I want to make macarons, my own cheese, chocolate croissants, cornish hens…oh the possibilities. This will most likely happen on what we like to call “cheat days”. I’ll try my best to post the outcomes here.

So there you have it. 27 is already shaping up to be a good year. A very good year.
